The nature of the hard X - ray power - law tail in M 87

چکیده

Spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the elliptical galaxy M 87 with the MECS instrument on board BeppoSAX demonstrates that the hard X-ray power-law tail, originally discovered by ASCA (Matsumoto et al 1996; Allen et al. 1999), originates in the innermost 2. Our results are consistent with it being produced in an Accretion Dominated Flow, although a substantial jet contribution cannot be ruled out. An origin from a Seyfert-like nucleus is disfavored by our data. As a by-product of this result, we present an analysis of the thermal emission coming from the center of the Virgo cluster, which exhibits a strong positive radial temperature gradient, along with a radial decrease of the iron abundance.

A Hard X-ray Power-law Spectral Cutoff in Centaurus X-4

The low-mass X-ray binary Cen X-4 is the brightest and closest (<1.2 kpc) quiescent neutron star transient. Previous 0.5–10 keV X-ray observations of Cen X-4 in quiescence identified two spectral components: soft thermal emission from the neutron star atmosphere and a hard power-law tail of unknown origin. We report here on a simultaneous observation of Cen X-4 with NuSTAR (3–79 keV) and XMM-Ne...

Transient Gamma-ray Emission from Cygnus X-3 Detected by AGILE: Leptonic and Hadronic Emission Models

The AGILE satellite detected several episodes of transient γ-ray emission from Cygnus X-3. Cross-correlating the AGILE light curve with both X-ray and radio monitoring data, we found that the main events of γ-ray activity were detected while the system was in soft spectral X-ray states, that coincide with local and often sharp minima of the hard X-ray flux, a few days before intense radio outbu...

Suzaku Detection of Extended/Diffuse Hard X-Ray Emission from the Galactic Center

Five on-plane regions within ±0.8 of the Galactic center were observed with the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) onboard Suzaku. From all regions, significant hard X-ray emission was detected with HXD-PIN up to 40 keV, in addition to the extended plasma emission which is dominant in the XIS band. The hard X-ray signals are inferred to come primarily from a spat...

A Broadband X-ray Study of the Geminga Pulsar with Nustar and Xmm-newton

We report on the first hard X-ray detection of the Geminga pulsar above 10 keV using a 150 ks observation with the NuSTAR observatory. The double-peaked pulse profile of non-thermal emission seen in the soft X-ray band persists at higher energies. Broadband phase-integrated spectra over the 0.2–20 keV band with NuSTAR and archival XMM-Newton data do not fit to a conventional twocomponent model ...

A model of the steep power law spectra and high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in luminous black hole X-ray binaries

We propose a new model of the steep power law state of luminous black hole X-ray binaries. The model uses the fact that at high luminosities, radiation pressure dominated accretion discs become effectively optically thin. The gas temperature therefore rises sharply inwards, producing local saturated Compton spectra with rapidly increasing peak energy. These spectra sum together to form a steep ...
